Laughing Matters...

.
Update 5-17-09: Word to Biden. "Loose Lips Sink Ships!" But, hey, as long as you get a laugh, I guess the rest is just about national security. And then there's David Axelrod, Obama's campaigne cheif, who couldn't resist a joke connecting Miss California to a dog. I have not touched the Miss California story because it has saturated the news cycle (and she said nothing wrong in the first place), but I mention it here because Axelrod tried to make it a laughing matter.

I know that the speech at the Whit House Correspondents Dinner is a time when presidents have typically used self-deprecating humor, but if you listen carefully, this is different than such occasions in the past. Listen to how many seriously controversial issues Obama glibly mocks. Since my last post was about his Chief of Staff, I'll mention that at about the 3:20 mark on this video he confirms the reputation of Rahm Emanuel's foul mouth. He later seems to joke about seeking a gay marriage in Iowa and about "people of color." He is truly enjoying his close ties to the press.

Granted, this speech was written by writers, and Obama delivers it well for laughs, but at the 12:30 mark, his remarks turn serious toward the press in the room. He talks about the need for newspapers and complains about cable news (which means Fox News. He left talk radio alone since Wanda Sykes had already gone there as you'll see in the bottom screen.).

In the middle of these serious closing remarks (at 14:55), he says:"We look to you for truth even if it's always an approximation." And the room full of reporters whom he already revealed had "all voted for him" all laughed. But he was not trying to be funny. Truth to Obama is an approximation, a commodity forged when the heat of reality as he sees it is dipped into the "cool" he exudes.

But before all that, our president sat and listened to gay-activist-comedian Wanda Sykes completely twist the truth about some remarks made by Rush Limbaugh months ago when he said he hoped that the socialist ideas forced upon the nation in Obama's first 100 days would not succeed so that America could return to being a free enterprise country without the government taking everything over. In other words, "quit bailing out things doomed to fail. When government "fixes it" (ala the "affordable housing" fiasco) they ruin it."

Rush's true statement and the media's twisting of it has been written about ad nausium and every person in that room knows what was truly said and meant. They know Sykes is flat-out lying. Not to mention that nearly every news outlet in that room covered countless remarks against President Bush from antagonists who hoped his initiatives would fail, and that was never called treason. But that is because Bush was not the "Chosen One." That is the only explanation of why Sykes can get a presidential laugh from her public "hate crime."

It's shameless, but look at the audience reaction and the ever-cool smile on the president's face. I don't care what a person thinks of Rush Limbaugh, this is public hate in the face of the president. Is this what Obama means when he says "truth is an approximation"? That one of his followers can twist someone's words into a lie; repeat it often to the fawning press; laugh at it collectively; and thereby it becomes truth?

In fairness to Wanda Sykes, her opening 7 minutes poked playful fun at those in the room for fawning over Obama. She also lampooned Joe Biden, but is his endless blather a laughing matter? During a time of war "loose lips sink ships" is not funny.

I used to tell my students that you can tell a lot about a person's character when you take note of the things that make him laugh and the things that make him cry. Those emotions spring from the heart. (The same can be said of a room full of people.) Since we have not yet seen Obama "moved to tears" at the death of his grandmother, or at the bedside of a wounded soldier, or while handing a widow a traiangular flag. Thus far, we only have these "cool" occasions to go by, and that’s why his laughing matters
.
Since the president had a few laughs at our expense Saturday night, let's take a moment to have a few at his.

Oh, My!!!! I was saddened as I watched the crowds laughing! My thoughts went to really how "lost" they are in their so-called "en-lightenment"! What a difference a few months makes from one administration to another! I think this country really will go to "H@ll in a handbasket" because of the self-serving, selfish power-mongers.

Actually, it is no laughing matter for the Left who must be scared silly of Rush to go after him the way they have lately.

I had not listened to Rush in a couple of years when I decided recently to tune in and find out what the man thinks about our current administration. That Rush, he's good! He's REALLY good. The Left does not have anyone comparable to Rush to do their bidding and comedians who are into shock humor do not cut it.

As to Cheney, he is a true patriot. He seems determined to get out there in front of the public and tell them the truth.

WSL,
Thanks for reading and commenting. It prompted me to go back and "tweak" my post (and catch some spelling errors). The things we laugh and cry at reveal much about our character. It's not "cool" to cry so we haven't seen that side of him yet. (In fact, come to think of it, I don't recall one moment in his two public years when a tear of sorrow has shown in Obama's eyes. I wonder what it cause it when we do and what that will tell us of him?)

SQ,
I know what you mean. Rush is the man they love to hate. True his arrogance, which is part of his act, can be annoying, but what they really hate is the fact that for two decades his arrows have consistently been "spot on" and like you said... they have no archers. I have not listened to Rush because I'm at work when he's on, but I do wish I could have heard his response to this weekend hate crime that the president witnessed with a smile.

I have a friend who is a dichotomy (sp). Not a follower as you and I are...but is a conservative with many elements that would lend themselves to her being one!! She doesn't care for Obama at all and says she can't stomach his speeches. Was with her today and she shared that she wishes she would listen to Rush sometimes (despite his loud rantings) as she feels he must espouse the truth since he is so much hated by the left. She recently was at a gathering of liberals (remember I live near a very liberal area of the country) where a "leader" shared that he's excited about the 'coming' new world government (or something along those lines) and she told me she'd never heard of such a thing. An opening for me to tell her "yes indeed, it's quite Biblical in fact" and I gave her a synopsis of what that might be like. She doesn't care for me to share the full content of my beliefs though she knows where I'm coming from. So prayers need to go up for her to have her heart opened! At any rate...these are troubling days, I must say!

I think Obama is probably insensitive to the feelings of others. He laughs when it is inappropriate. He makes jokes that are inappropriate. Remember the joke he made about the Special Olymics? What is a good word to use to describe the kind of person he is? I have one in mind.

Obama is immature and his sense of humor and decency illuminates his background like a spotlight. Those are the type of jokes and humor I hear from people that are far less educated than this supposed Constitutional lawyer. Obama is nothing more than a street level organizer and has no more business being in such a position as President of the United States as would some party hack ward leader from Philly, New York or Boston. Obama is in way over his head and it's beginning to show more and more everyday with the type of sophomoric behavior and his miniscule understanding of national security and economics.

As far as the comedienne's remarks about Rush Limbaugh; the press is following their pattern of letting people say those types of things without questions, reporting that those people did say those things and then later repeating those things in their reporting as if they were facts. That's why Rush goes right after them when something is reported that isn't the facts and he stays on it until it's dropped.

The Press did that to Bush and Bush never responded immediately discrediting the stories. That's why the liberals and the people that are normally uninvolved in politics can repeat the untrue platitudes that the press parroted about Bush over and over again. I know you try and correct those people now when they repeat those old untrue stories but it's too late, the story and the idea are with those people and no amount of proof short of an admission from the press is going to change the way they feel about that untrue story. The Press knows how that works and they use it to the fullest to gain political strength for the liberals they support like Obama.

I find Obama crude, disrespectful of the office and unworthy to be President.

Wow! We have some feeling again! For about three months I have been apathetic to the news. All that "hope" had left me kind of hopeless.

But reading your thoughts (and seeing my timid friend JG come out of her shell ha ha) has given me a smile today.

I love Obama's reversal on Gitmo. I only wish he'd give W a call and say, "Hey, George, You were write I was wrong. Your plan kept the country safe for seven years. I was on the brink of changing that streak. Wish I could let them go, but I know that will only prove what you were saying." But of course Obama will never admit any of that. He'll just reverse his promise. And for that I am thankful. I wonder how it feels to be elected on weak-kneed bravado?

I must admit it has also been fun to see Nancy Pelosi against the ropes for a few days. Loved what Gingrich said. Something like... "She was either incompetent then or is lying now--she has to choose one or the other."

I'll be in Florida for a week, but I'll be checking in.

Imagine if Biden were our president. Isn't that a scary thought though. Even more frightening is the thought of Pelosi being our president.

SQ,
I'd take Dick Cheney any day. Biden was a bad choice and Obama and company can joke about it all they want. The truth is Biden is dangerously infatuated with his own voice. May he continue to keep the president so preoccupied that he gets less of his agenda done!
