That Cocky Lift of the Head...

.
In the comments of Memorial Day post below two readers pointed out that it was that lift of the chin, that arrogant "better than you" look that he has when he speaks that bothered them the most in President Obama's speech last Thursday in which he proudly pointed out how wrong the Bush national security efforts were for the eight years following 9-11 when we had no further attacks on our homeland.

I'll let these recently exhibited photos of "Barry the Freshman" speak for themselves. Since he was only 19 at the time, we may want to cut him some slack, but it is worth noting that that cocky lift of his head has been part of his "feeling cool" persona for many years.

Yep! That's the look alright that I detest. He lifts that chin and then is forced to look down his nose at the crowd. It is just such a bad pose to take. Why doesn't somebody clue him in?

It was funny I found these pictures the night after your comment.
When I taught speech years ago, we had a whole unit on "body language" and it is a fine line between confidence and cocky.
In acting they call it "leading" e.g. a character may lead with his pelvis, stomach, chest, chin, forehead, etc. and a a lift of the chin equates "looking down on others" a la Yule Brennor as the King of Siam. He was likeable but he was no doubt the king. Thus far we have not seen Obama rest his fists on his hips.

The King and I. Loved that movie with Deborah Kerr.

I wonder what the body language expert that is on O'Reilly now and then would have to say about Obama's chin lift.

I've seen his look before. The street gangs in Philly are loaded with guys like him that act tough when they got their gangs with them but you go eye to eye,
toe to toe to see who's going draw down first the look disappears and it's replaced with wide eyed alarm and fear.

Not enough people pay attention to what's really going on with this man because the news media props him up and they feel they can go about taking care of their own business all the while Obama works to take from them what they have and worked so hard for. How do we wake people up without sounding like fringe, disgruntled or angry? I guess people are going to have to feel the stinging burn of socialism before they wake up.

SQ,
I'm a fan of all the old classical musicals and that particular storyline was remade as a nonmusical with Jody Foster a few years back. But it was Yule Brenner's "proud" king stance that came to mind.
I like that segment of O'Reilly,

J.G.
"How do we wake people up without sounding like fringe, disgruntled or angry? " That is the tricky part. The left can belittle and crucify everyone from Bush to Clarence Thomas to Sarah Palin, and they're considered astute. But we point out the obvious about liberals (or racially-biased Supreme Court picks) and we are fringe loonies.
That is why I try hard not to write like a "fringe loony" in this little corner of the blogosphere.

Now there's an update to ALL of this with the latest speech to the Saudi's re: his Muslim roots! Nothing like trying to straddle the fence!!

The "story" is still unfolding and I might say ahead of time..."That's a fine kettle of fish, you've gotten us into!"

WSL,
I came here to post the "non post" above and found your comment.

There is just too much to say this week. I don't know where to start. This is surreal... and as we always say...completely in God's hands.

speaking of musicals...

Pick a Little, Talk a Little ---

Professor, this kind of man doesn't belong in any presidency.
Of course, I shouldn't tell you this but he advocates talking to Muslims!

Karzai!
Zardari!
Mubarak!

And the worst thing
Of course, I shouldn't tell you this, but – I'll tell.

The man lived in Chicago, let me tell.

Stop! I visited the White House, I'll tell.

He made brazen overtures to men who never
had a friend in this country till he came here.

Oh, yes
That man made brazen overtures
With a gilt-edged guarantee
He had a golden glint in his eye
And a silver voice with a counterfeit ring

Just melt him down and you'll reveal
A lump of lead as cold as steel
Here, where a man's heart should be!
